Am I in a fire zone?

Type your address. See your CAL FIRE fire hazard zone on a map, and whether California's Zone 0 rule would cover your home.

Uses CAL FIRE's public maps. We don't keep your address.

What the zones mean

  • Fire hazard zone. CAL FIRE rates land as Moderate, High or Very High fire hazard. The rating is about the land and its surroundings, not your house.
  • State Responsibility Area. Land where the state is responsible for fighting wildfires. Much of rural California is in one.
  • Local Responsibility Area. Land covered by a city or local fire agency, usually inside towns.

State maps took effect April 1, 2024. Local maps were released in four phases from February to March 2025. Source: Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Zone 0 in short

Zone 0 is the first 5 feet around a building.

The Board of Forestry approved it in August 2026 for all buildings in State Responsibility Areas and occupied buildings in Very High zones in local areas. It is not in effect yet.

Insurers already give discounts for the same work, so you do not have to wait for the rule.

Every Zone 0 item, with alerts when the rule changes: Zone Zero Guidelines.

Your city or county may have its own rules.
